People assume that dark circles are due to lack of sleep and tiredness. While this can be one of the causes, other reasons cause dark eye circles. Some of the reasons are the aging process or allergies.

Causes of dark circles under your eyes

  • Fatigue

Allergy reactions can cause dark circles. Your body releases histamines to kill harmful bacteria when you have an allergic reaction. Histamines cause blood vessels in your body to dilate, which makes it more visible under your skin.

Allergy can also make you scratch your itchy skin around your eyes. It can worsen your symptoms, causing swelling, inflammation as well as broken blood vessel leading to dark shadows forming under your eyes.

  • Sun exposure

When you overexpose your skin to the sun, your body produces excess melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives your skin color. Too much sun, especially for your eyes, can cause the skin around your eyes to darken.

  • Genetics

Your family history plays a part in having circles under your eyes. It is a trait that you can inherit while you are young and worsen as you age.

  • Lack of fatty tissue around the eyes

  • Thyroid conditions

There are some home remedies that you can use to help reduce the appearance of dark circles under your eyes. They are;

Use skincare products

You can apply eye cream for dark circles that contain antioxidants, which will help reduce appearance of dark circles. Vitamin C and E are the antioxidants that can help you to treat dark circles.

Use make up

While cosmetic do not cure dark circles, they can help conceal them. Make up cover your dark circles making it blend with you skin. You should be carefull on which products you use because some can cause allagies to your skin.

Sleep well

Ensure that you sleep and rest well to avoid dark circles. To avoid you skin looking pale, sleep atleast seven hours a day.

Other treatments include taking a lot of water, Using tea bags, applying cold compress and medical treatment.


For many people dark circles are temporary and are mostly caused by aging and lak of sleep. Even though there are a number of home treatment starting from apply eye cream for dark circles to getting enough sleep to dark cirles are no cause of alarm.
